Are everyday black women unworthy of the same protections?Īs soon as a black woman or feminine-presenting black person reaches anything close to a following that goes beyond the personal, they know they have entered a world where attack is inevitable. ![]() And now, Homeland Security is reportedly investigating the hack of Leslie's website. When Twitter finally took a stand and removed Milo Yiannopoulos, an infamously aggressive online abuser, many black women spoke out in support, but that support was coupled with frustration. When we consider the silence surrounding black women’s mental health, it’s difficult not to see the danger of this continual breaking down of Leslie Jones. And they succeeded in permanently damaging Leslie’s online presence. So they attacked, attempting to hurt her sense of self, her self-esteem, and her sense of control over both herself, her body, and her life. Our society doesn’t support the success or enjoyment of black women, and her attackers knew they could hide within the shroud of both misogynoir and the anonymity of the internet. She is being destroyed because she is a black woman who found success and who found extreme happiness during the Olympics. ![]() She is being hurt, and has been hurt, in a way that most of us will never know and can only imagine. But this doesn’t mean that all women - and everyone - shouldn’t rally around Leslie Jones both in her time of need and in her career in general. ![]()
